Lower and Upper Hotels clearly visible, as is the road following the sae just above the lower Hotel. Selected station is on the face of the small hill to the left of upper Hotel. The alternative site is behind this hill. The power generating plant is in the valley to the right of the hotels.

initially a location was porposed on this headland. It was decided this would be too noisy, especially in the microseismic band!

this path is found just behind the Upper Hotel. An armed Security Guard is stationed permanently at the Upper Hotel, which is open to, but generally not used by guests.

the Quarry site
the Quarry site
about 60m above the Upper Hotel, and about 15m off the path (itself very rarely travelled), is an old small quarry used in the construction of the Hotel. The depth of this corner is about 3m. The plan is to located the sensor vault in the corner shown. A continuous concrete pour for base and 4 sides will ensure waterproofing. Thermal Insulation will be ensured by wrapping the concrete vault on the 2 exposed sides with the many loose rocks found around the quarry.

communications will likely be from direct DSL line to the road about 100m below. If spread spectrum is required, a shot about 60m to the Upper Hotel will be required, about a 10m high mast required.

Generating Plant
Generating Plant
The hotel has its own Generator a about 100m from both Upper and Lower Hotel, in a valley between 2 small peaks. The gernerator is continuously run, as the Hotel does not rely on the local power Authority. Note there are 3 generators which each run 8hours. Every 8 hours the hotel switches, with power outage for about 15secs. The noise from the generting plant can be heard throughout the valley, on all the land owned by Hotel. This is likliest source of high frequency noise in the area.

During the field survey, we walked around the Hotel owned land. This picture is taken from the upper limit of the land. The Upper Hotel Roof is seen below on the shore. The hill with the chosen site location is just to the right of the Roof top.

This is the location of an alternative site. It is about 300 further back from the main road, with good access track, which is almost never travelled. Noise from road, sea, and generator all reduced at this site. The topography is far less steep. The reservoir is passively filled (no pumps!). Cons for this site: the rock is extremely hard, will be impractible to get to any depth. There are almost no soil deposits. Also, the likely communication is with DSL from local phone company. It is a long reach from direct line from the main road, and spread spectrum radio would require at least 2 shots (no direct shots to road). Security also poorer, more isolated.
